The Taiwan Tourism Administration announced that international arrivals to the country exceeded 7.85 million in 2024.
In a press briefing on Tuesday, 31st December, TTA director-general Chou Yung-hui lauded Taiwan’s travel and tourism sectors, pointing out how the tourism industry rebounded following the pandemic.
For 2025, Chou aims to create tourism markets within a four- to eight-hour flight to Taiwan this year, focusing on India, New Zealand, and Australia.
At the same time, the TTA will be opening new tourism information centres for foreign visitors in Sydney and Mumbai throughout the coming months.
Identifying key markets
Chou specifically highlighted North America and Europe as key markets for Taiwan’s tourism expansion.
He remarked that the TTA is planning to establish additional tourist information centres in Seattle and Amsterdam.
Likewise, the number of visitors from South Korea to Taiwan exceeded one million in 2024.
From January to October, the number of Japanese visitors to Taiwan also went over the one million mark, showing an increase of around 50 percent compared to the same period in 2023.
Opening the north to travellers
Chou said the focus for first-time foreign visitors is on promoting tourism in the north.
In alignment with the Thai ecotourism initiative, the TTA is slated to promote destinations, including Keelung’s Heping Island and Yilan’s Zhuangwei to Thai tourists.
It should also be noted that Thai luxury travelers enjoy shopping in Taiwan; in which case, the TTA seeks to offer more convenient shopping options for them.
Likewise, the administration will continue promoting discounts on Taiwan High Speed Rail tickets to encourage tourists to explore regions outside Taipei.
Efforts to promote Taiwan’s tourism through key events this year, including the Taiwan Lantern Festival, Taiwan Cycling Festival, and L’Etape Sun Moon Lake will also be heightened to draw in more tourists.
